Wacky Spring Holidays: International Waffle Day
How Our Family Celebrates International Waffle Day on March 25th
There is a reason we made sure to include International Waffle day on our Wacky Spring Holiday Stickie Set for our family calendars...March 25th marks one of my family's favorite foodie holidays—International Waffle Day! In our family, this isn’t just another day; it’s a tradition filled with homemade goodness, laughter, and of course, perfectly golden waffles. Instead of heading to a restaurant, we make from-scratch waffles and homemade syrup for a special family dinner. It’s a simple yet delicious way to celebrate, and today, I’m sharing our tradition, recipes, and tips for making this day extra sweet!
Why We Love International Waffle Day
This holiday originated in Sweden as Våffeldagen and has since spread worldwide. For us, it’s the perfect excuse to gather in the kitchen and enjoy a comforting meal that everyone loves. Plus, there’s something extra special about making waffles from scratch—crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and totally customizable with toppings.
Our Made-from-Scratch Waffle Recipe
Nothing beats homemade waffles (I've lost count of the number of times family and friends have asked for the recipe), and over the years, I’ve perfected our go-to recipe. I always use my Texas Waffle Iron, so the shapes make it extra fun. But honestly, they prob taste amazing because they're Texas waffles ;) Here’s how I make them:
Ingredients:
(10 servings)
- 4 eggs
- 3 cups milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2/3 cup melted butter
- 4 tablespoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 8 teaspoons baking powder
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions:
- Preheat your waffle iron and lightly grease it with butter or non-stick spray.
- In a blender, add all wet ingredients and blend.
- Add in the rest of your ingredients and blend.
- Pour batter into the waffle iron and cook according to your iron’s instructions until golden brown.
- Serve warm with homemade syrup and your favorite toppings!
Easy Homemade Cinnamon Syrup (non-dairy) – The Perfect Topping
Store-bought syrup doesn’t compare to the rich, buttery goodness of homemade syrup. I go for a non-dairy syrup recipe since a few of us are sensitive to dairy. Here’s our easy recipe:
Ingredients:
8 servings
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup water
Instructions:
- Put all ingredients into a saucepan. Bring to rolling boil, stirring often.
- Continue to boil and stir until mixture thickens to syrup consistency. Remove from heat; cool 10 min before servings.
Fun Ways to Make It a Family Tradition
To make International Waffle Day even more memorable, sometimes we like to:
- Try new toppings – Fresh fruit, whipped cream, or even dropping chocolate chips into the waffle iron after pouring in the waffle batter.
- Have a waffle bar – Let each family member choose what should be on the waffle bar and let everyone create their own waffle creation.
