đ National Bee Day Activity: How to Make a Simple Bee Bath with Your Kids
Â
Celebrate National Bee Day with this simple, hands-on project that I did with my kiddos: a DIY bee bath that doubles as a way to keep those bees out of your summer splash tables and helps out the bees too! It's a win win!Â
My kids were super excited to celebrate Bee Day this year because we had our Silly Spring Stickies on our calendar and they had been wondering what we were going to do.
I taught them about how bees play a vital role in pollinating our plants, and one way we can help themâespecially in the warmer monthsâis by offering clean water in a safe, shallow space.
Creating a bee bath is a beautiful way to teach kids about caring for nature. It only takes a few minutes to set up, and your backyard pollinators will thank you!
â What Youâll Need:
-
A shallow dish or saucer (ceramic or terra cotta works best)
-
Small pebbles, stones, or glass beads
-
Fresh water
-
Optional: flower petals for decoration
đ ïž Step-by-Step Bee Bath Instructions:
Step 1: Choose your dish
Pick a shallow, wide dish thatâs stable and wonât tip over easily. Terra cotta saucers, small pie plates, or even vintage plates work beautifully.
Step 2: Add pebbles or beads
Place a layer of small rocks, marbles, or decorative glass beads inside the dish. These act as little "landing pads" for bees to perch on while they drink.
Step 3: Pour in water
Slowly fill the dish with just enough water to reach partway up the pebblesâyou want bees to be able to land safely without the risk of drowning.
Step 4: Choose a bee-friendly location
Place your bee bath in a sunny, sheltered spotâideally near flowers, herbs, or your garden. Make sure itâs on level ground where kids and pets wonât accidentally knock it over.
Step 5: Refresh daily
To keep your bee visitors healthy, change the water every 1â2 days and rinse out any debris.
đŒ Tip: If you have herbs like lavender, mint, or thyme, place a few sprigs near the bath to naturally attract pollinators!
